Keynote Speakers

Dr. Shari Huhndorf, University of Oregon, specialist on Native American Literature, Native Cultural History, and Popular Culture. Author of Going Native: Indians in the American Cultural Imagination.

Dr. Richard Miller and Dr. Paul Hammond, Rutgers University, specialists in New Media Studies and Web 2.0. Work emphasizes the position and power of the humanities at large.

The Pacific Rim Conference on Literature and Rhetoric, in its 14th year, is an annual conference organized by Department of English graduate students and faculty at the University of Alaska Anchorage. We welcome critical papers pertaining to literature, literary studies, rhetoric, and composition from across the disciplines.

Call for Papers
This year’s conference explores the changing roles of literacy, identity and selfhood in both literature and rhetoric. How has the idea of identity and selfhood altered with the introduction of social networking sites and the possibility to re-create the self? What role does culture, nature, race, gender, group identity, and education play in defining character and character identity? What role does the author play in defining culture and self? How does visual rhetoric influence cultural perception?

Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Cultural Identity
  • Digital Literacy and New Media Studies
  • Performativity
  • Gender and Sexuality
  • Composition Studies
  • Pedagogy
  • Visual Rhetoric
  • The Politics of Citizenship
  • Post-Colonialism and Immigration

Individual paper proposals: Please send an abstract (500 words max.). All paper proposals must include the title of the paper; presenter's name and institutional affiliation; mailing address, phone and fax number, and email address.

Panel proposals: Please send an abstract (700 words max.) summarizing the panel's rationale and describing each paper. All panel proposals must include a title for the panel and a title for each paper. In addition, please include each panel member's name and institutional affiliation, mailing address, phone and fax number, and email address.
